Culture, tradition, and language are the essential pillars to a rich heritage which is an integral part of our identity. To me, heritage should be cherished and celebrated. It shapes who we are and connects us to our roots. As a Latin artist, I am aware of the rich heritage of my culture and the struggles that have been faced to maintain its traditions and identities. Even with this awareness I am challenged, and often frustrated, when relating to my Latin heritage.
Throughout my life, I have struggled to connect with my customs. Despite having Hispanic parents who have cultural recognition and the ability to pass down the traditions and language of our culture, they made a conscious decision not to educate me. The social pressures, lost opportunities, and toxic stereotypes in modern American society, has left me feeling disconnected and adrift.
As a means to explore my cultural identity, I visually explore what it feels like to be cut off from my roots. These works have carefully lit gestures that feature my body set against a dark, engulfing background. Through carefully choreographed movements, the viewer can experience the discomfort I endure. I emphasize internal and societal pressures with tape wrapping my body and skin being pulled and stretched. These images obscure my identity as for now it is lost without my heritage.
Additionally, the prints you see before you are life sized, and draw the viewer to think of the reality which I live in on a daily basis. There is no escaping and there is no turning away. I am bastardized of my ancestry and a product of my society. Culture is not a commodity and it is to be strengthened and respected. For those of you who still have it, hold onto it dearly.
